Got a Razer mouse or keyboard? Read this before you upgrade to macOS Sierra

If you're a Mac owner with a Razer peripheral, and you're thinking of upgrading to macOS Sierra following its release yesterday, then be warned – there are apparently compatibility issues with the Synapse software and Apple's newest desktop OS.

This has meant that we've witnessed an outpouring of complaints from people with Razer mice and keyboards that no longer function correctly following the Sierra upgrade – for example, check out this thread on the Razer forum, and a short thread on Reddit.

There have been reports of Razer keyboards (such as the BlackWidow TE Chroma) not working at all, and mice (like the Deathadder and Naga) buttons failing to work, and/or mouse sensitivity going all weird – or worse still peripherals outright crashing the operating system.

Fried Synapse

This seems to be down to the Synapse software conflicting with macOS, and the generally suggested solution for now is just to ditch Synapse from your Mac – at least until Razer updates the software with a fix.

One user (Kale) on the official Razer forum suggested: "Once Synapse has been removed you have the ability to plug the Razer peripheral back in to your Mac and use it as normal just without the luxuries of Synapse."

Indeed, Razer's support account on Twitter also suggested that "uninstalling Synapse should enable the mouse to work as plug and play".

Although others say that even after uninstalling Synapse, they're still encountering issues such as the scroll button not working.

Still other folks, for example on the Reddit thread, have suggested that to get things back to normal not only did they have to uninstall Syanpse, but also: "Manually delete the Razer kext as well (/Library/Extensions/RazerHid.kext)". Note that we haven't tried this, and we're not recommending you do it – it's just some advice that's out there online, and obviously your mileage with it may vary.

There are always going to be teething issues when a new OS is released, but in this case folks are frustrated with Razer because this problem has apparently been known about for some time, and things with Synapse are clearly still badly broken.

Of course there are other apps that won't play nice with macOS in some shape or form, as well, and indeed we're working on a fresh section of our Sierra review which will evaluate compatibility with existing Mac apps in detail. Stay tuned for that, because it will be coming soon.

Opinion: Oculus Rift has lost its touch by pricing itself out of the VR market

Opinion: Oculus Rift has lost its touch by pricing itself out of the VR market

Oculus Rift began life as the poster child for the virtual reality revolution. Born from the garage musings of teenage tech prodigy Palmer Luckey, its early Kickstarter campaign inspired people to give VR another chance, shaking off the relics of its 90s arcade past.

But recent months have seen its crown (or should that be visor?) slip. And the news that its Oculus Touch controllers will cost £190 at launch has seen its position become even rockier.

Losing touch

In the US, those Touch Controllers, priced as a straight conversion, come in at $250, and AU$325 for Australian VR fans.

Local pricing of course could come in a little lower, but once you factor in the £499 ($600, AU$649) cost of the headset itself, Oculus Rift pretty much loses the lead in price it had over its biggest competitor.

Oculus Touch

Many balked at the price of the HTC Vive, Oculus' main rival in the PC VR space. It came pre-packaged with a pair of large but intuitive VR controllers, at an initially eye-popping £689 ($799, AU$899) price.

But with a combined cost of £690, the Oculus Rift is on a par with the Vive. Even if the smaller Oculus Touch controllers prove more responsive than the Vive's, that's before you factor in the HTC Vive's room-scale camera kit, allowing you to move around the virtual spaces presented by the headset.

Oculus has plans to introduce player-tracking room scale experiences of its own, but it's hard to imagine them doing it without the added expense of extra room-scanning peripherals - the cost of which is already accounted for in the Vive's existing price tag.

Here comes a new challenger!

That's all before you even start to take into account Oculus's most-dangerous rival - PlayStation, with its PlayStation VR kit.

PlayStation VR

Set to be released on October 13, it's priced at £349 ($399) - though that doesn't include the sold-separately and required £44.99 ($59.99) PlayStation 4 Camera unit.

That's £394 ($460) for the minimum kit needed (not including the console itself - though that's likely cheaper than any PC accompanying the Oculus anyway), while its PlayStation Move motion controllers cost just £69.99 (around $50) for a pair.

So, £464 (around $510) for the complete PS VR experience - still pricey, but significantly cheaper than the PC alternatives. And of course you'll also need to shell out for a PS4 if you haven't already got one.

It's worth noting however that the PS VR kit is the least flashy of the big three VR headsets, with its resolution at 960 x 1080 per eye, as opposed to Vive and Rift's 1080 x 1200 per eye.

Halo effect

With its lower price and installed userbase of over 43 million, the PlayStation VR kit is expected to take an early lead over the Oculus Rift, with the Rift only officially launching through UK retail channels this week.

But it's possible that the PS VR will have a halo effect on the virtual reality market as a whole, with entranced PlayStation gamers looking for the high-fidelity fixes the PS VR's competition offers.

Still, it's a discussion that we really shouldn't be having. From a trailblazing position, the Oculus Rift's abilities currently pale in comparison to Vive's room-walking experiences, and its price far more difficult to stomach than its PlayStation console alternative.

Factor in its continued production delays (we're still just looking at a loose "winter" release date for the Oculus Touch controllers), a lack of triple-A titles and relative lack of marketing push, and Oculus no longer looks like the one to watch.

Zuckerberg VR

You have to wonder where Facebook's involvement factors into this. With Zuckerberg's near-limitless funds bankrolling Oculus now, perhaps it's playing the much longer game.

Indeed, a recent Bloomberg profile on the company put the emphasis on Oculus's ongoing research and development work, while Zuckerberg has hinted at a desire to expand the Rift's audience beyond gamers and into the social networking space.

But for those that saw Luckey's original idea grow from a forum post to an actual VR headset, it's becoming hard not to feel burned - at least in the pocket.

Canary Flex is a Cool New Weatherproof HD Security Camera

Canary, the US based startup has now launched a new all-weather security camera that aims to take on the likes of Nest Cam and Netgear Arlo. Dubbed the Canary Flex, the device is the first indoor and outdoor HD security camera that can be used wire-free or plugged in.

canary-flex-outside-wall

Canary claims that their engineers faced immense difficulty in designing an outdoor camera that’s not just weatherproof but can also swivel around for more accurate monitoring. Canary Flex makes use of a magnetic 360° swivel base that enables you to attach it to any flat surface, be it the outer wall of your house, staircase of your flat, inside your cupboard or even in your bedroom.

Canary Flex packs a dual band 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi on the inside that’s capable of delivering a robust signal over a wide range of area. This essentially means that you aren’t required to install any other additional Hubs, which otherwise would have been a necessity for any other security camera. The rotating swivel security device comes with a HD camera that boasts of a 116-degree wide angle lens and a Motion detection sensor. This sensor comes in play by alerting you whenever it detects any motion in its surrounding. The rest of the sensors include a 3-axins acclerometer, Ambient Light and a PIR. That aside, the camera is capable of shooting in the dark thanks to its night vision lens.

Canary Flex

The Canary Flex also boasts of a microphone and a two-way built-in speaker that helps you to communicate with the smart device. To power the device while on wireless mode is a 6700mAH Li-Ion battery, which according to Canary can last for quite some time. In terms of security the Canary Flex uses a dedicated encryption chip, AES 256-bit data encryption and an encrypted cloud storage for keeping your personal information secure.

The weatherproof security camera from Canary is now up for pre-orders in the US for a price of $199 (Rs 13,500 approx.) and comes with 1 year of manufacturer warranty. It’s however worth noting that the warranty won’t be eligible for devices that are bought from third party resellers.

Searching Google Drive just became much, much easier

Searching Google Drive just became much, much easier

Have you got a weighty Google Drive account loaded with all manner of files? Ever have trouble finding something in that sprawl? Well, Google just made searching for stuff much easier in Drive with the introduction of 'natural language processing'.

In other words, you can now phrase your search conversationally, as if you're asking a person to find something for you.

For example, let's say you can't remember the name of a particular spreadsheet file you worked on at the start of the year pertaining to your business budget. To locate it, you can now simply type 'find my budget spreadsheet from January'.

Google Drive will then clarify exactly what search you mean to conduct ('Did you mean: budget, Type: spreadsheets') and you can click to confirm and get the results. Or you can ask things like 'show me all presentations from Sarah', and so on.

Google Drive will learn from these queries as it goes along, so in time, the whole system will become more accurate and useful.

Autocorrect action

Another handy feature which has been implemented is the automatic correction of spelling errors in searches. So if you mistype and accidentally search for a 'buget' spreadsheet, Drive will clarify if you meant to search for 'budget', just as the Google search engine does.

Furthermore, a few extra tweaks have been made to Google Docs, including the ability to easily split a document into multiple columns. Also, Docs now automatically saves a copy of any type of non-Google file format you're working on.

All of these features are now rolling out across the globe, so you should see them soon enough – they're already live in our Google Drive account.
