5 Artificially Intelligent Smartphone Apps You Must Try
Every tech conglomerate is now talking about artificial intelligence for making the applications we use every day, smarter. AI enables algorithms to learn our habits, what we actually like, what we don’t, where we are at what time, basically, it attempts to bring human-level accuracy to the apps we’re accustomed to. While, the AI world is still in its infancy considering the immense potential, developers have already begun to realize machine learning’s potential and have been devising ways for improving functionality. Hence, in this article, we talk about five such smartphone applications you should take a look at.
1. Recent News
As the name suggests, Recent News is a relatively smarter news aggregation app powered by artificially intelligent algorithms. The app will study your reading habits, how much you read daily, what you like or share, and through that, suggest articles that you will definitely consume. The Android app works flawlessly if you regularly start using it, at least for me it was able to accurately recommend some really engaging stories. The interface has been kept quite straightforward for five primary tabs including Recommended, Home which will consist of articles from the topics you’ve manually selected, Hot News, Local, and All Topics. You can further customize the app by adding various filters. Recent News is completely free on the play store and Apple’s app store, so go ahead and give it a shot.
2. Swiftkey Keyboard
Swiftkey, the most popular third-party Android keyboard recently overhauled its core word prediction system by integrating neural networks replacing the conventional and outdated probability-based algorithm. In layman terms, Swiftkey now relates relations among words as nerves in your brain. For instance, if you typed “I’ll meet you at the”, through the probability architecture, Swiftkey would come up with “moment” or “end” because it is inferring only “at the”. With the neural approach, it will show results such as “airport” or “office”. Although, it only works with a limited number of languages as of now including English. Still, the much advanced AI system is surely better than any other keyboard application available in the play store right now. Swiftkey is available for free in the play store if you’d like to try. Unfortunately, Swiftkey’s AI capabilities are currently limited to Android.
3. ELSA
Ever wanted professional lessons for improving your English accent but don’t want to spend the hefty fee? Well, artificially intelligent app, ELSA (English Language Speech Assistant) has got you covered. ELSA is a virtual pronunciation coach that will guide you through a series of exercises for teaching you the basic as well as advanced elements of speaking English. The app, first of all, asks what is your native language which also consists local ones like Hindi, Bengali and programs its questions accordingly. You can also input in specific words you would like to know the pronunciation of. It’s a free app available on the play store and app store, go ahead and give it a shot if you want to improve your English speech.
4. Siftr Magic Cleaner
Siftr Magic Cleaner utilizes artificial intelligence for locating spam and junk photos on your phone to free up some space. These images are individually analyzed locally through a series of machine learning algorithms. Despite that, the app works surprisingly fast and provides apt results most of the times. You can manually select the photos you want to delete or just let Siftr do its magic. It is available for free on the play store and iOS’s app store.
5. Microsoft Pix
Pix is a camera app for iOS from Microsoft that uses AI for suggesting tweaks and edits for your captured shots. It can adjust typical elements like exposure, white balance, focus and consequently chooses the best shot from a burst of captures. Additionally, the app even recognizes people in the frame and accordingly, improves background focus, highlights to make sure everyone looks good. Once the image has been taken, it lets you preview the original and enhanced versions allowing you to compare the alternations. Microsoft Pix is available for free on the iOS app store.

TRAI Mandate Pegs Minimum Wired Broadband Speed in India at 512Kbps
India’s telecom regulatory authority TRAI has made it compulsory for all the Broadband providers to at least ensure a minimum speed of 512Kbps after users exhaust their initial data quota. The mandate also asks the service providers both fixed and wired to clearly notify the users about the throttled speed instead of masking it with the unlimited internet shenanigans.
The ruling is surprising since TRAI had earlier recommended a minimum of 2Mbps and has also issued a consultation paper regarding the same. In fact, earlier this year Airtel opposed the recommendations that prescribed 512Kbps as minimum broadband speed and instead explicitly stated that “service provider should be free to throttle the speed to 64Kbps after the expiry of assigned data limit to the customers.” That said Govt owned BSNL has increased its FUP to 1Mbps as opposed to the earlier 512Kbps.
While we have been associating broadband with high speeds and reliable connectivity in actual it seems to differ, atleast in India. In the United States, the FCC has denounced the DSL providers as broadband providers and has set a minimum speed of 25Mbps. The highest minimum speed, however, is set by South Korea at 29 Mbps. As pointed out by the recent Akamai reports India has been languishing behind in the APAC region with speeds averaging 3.5 Mbps. With the ever-increasing content consumptions and the mushrooming of streaming services like Netflix, it is only fair that the minimum speed is increased.
It is surprising to know that many of the ISP’s have been providing internet packages with throttled speed of 256Kbps. Furthermore, the narrowing gap between the minimum speeds for the fixed line and the wireless nips out any incentive one would have by going in for a fixed line. India has primarily been a mobile-first country with the wireless broadband connections pegged at 148.93 million overshadowing the 17.49 million wired broadband subscribers.
The bottom line is that the 512Kbps minimum limit is simply not enough. The regulatory authorities should vie for a minimum speed >10Mbps and should formulate a rigid framework for the ISP’s. Also, timely speed audits on the wired broadband players are something that will bolster up the efforts.

Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier Pro with OLED Display and RFID Technology Launched at $220
Xiaomi has now added yet another device to their smart home range in the form of Mi Air Purifier Pro. It’s an enhanced version of the Mi Air Purifier 2 that currently retails in India for Rs 9,999.
The Mi Air Purifier Pro shares a similar external footprint with its predecessor. The main external difference, however, lies in the presence of an OLED display that shows real-time air quality and the condition of the surrounding including temperature, humidity etc. The circular display is surrounded by a ring that shows three types of colors namely green, yellow and red depending on the air quality of the surrounding. The display comes with an ambient light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the panel depending on the external lighting. That aside, it is smart enough to get turned at night to prevent disturbing you during sleep.
The Mi Air Purifier Pro comes with improved air filtering capabilities. It uses a newly designed air flow pathway and a pressurized system that enables it to boast of a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of 500m/h. Xiaomi claims that their new Mi Air Purifier Pro is 61% more effective in purifying the air as compared to the last generation model. Besides that, the new air purifier is capable of purifying air over a range of 60 square meters, which is a vast improvement over the Mi Air Purifier 2.
The smart air purifier features a high precision laser sensor that accurately detects particles of up to 0.3 μm diameter. This apparently makes it faster than most other purifier in the market, while boasting of instantaneous data that’s being displayed on the OLED display located to the front of the device. It’s worth noting the filter inside the Mi Air Purifier Pro makes use of RFID technology for real-time monitoring of the filter for a long duration. The latest air purifier from Xiaomi apparently makes use of three layers of filters including PET, Toray, and Activated Carbon.
The Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier Pro goes on sale in China starting November 11 at 1499 Yuan (Rs 14,759/$220 approx.) It will be available via Xiaomi’s official website, their crowdfunding portal Mijia, JD.com and a number of other Chinese retailers.

Intex has updated its Aqua line-up with yet another new smartphone, the Aqua Power M. The Aqua M aims at entry-level budget segment and packs in a decent set of hardware with respect to its price of Rs 4,800. The device is only available in Champagne Gold color option. The highlight of the Aqua Power M is the large 4350mAh battery pack which is a rarity in this segment.
The Aqua Power M comes equipped with a 5-inch HD display set at a resolution of 294 ppi. Under the hood lies MediaTek MT6735 quad-core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM and Mali 400 GPU. On the memory front, the smartphone offers 8GB of onboard memory along with a microSD card slot that can further accommodate up to 32GB. The Aqua Power M runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Camera setup includes 5-Megapixel primary with dual-tone flash and 4P Lens. Secondary camera shapes up in the form of a 2-Megapixel sensor and comes with a LED flash. The camera app also includes the usual bevy of features like the Face Beauty, Gesture Capture, and Smile Shoot.

Other features include smart wake, emergency rescue, non-touch gesture, gyroscope and proximity sensors on board. The biggest downside of Intex Aqua Power M is that is misses out on 4G support, which considering the rise in the VoLTE usage is a deal breaker. Also, Intex is yet to announce the details regarding the availability.
