Honor 8 Smart with 5.2-inch FHD Display and 13MP Sony Camera Launched at Rs 19,999

In a bid to appeal to the mass market, Huawei has launched a brand new edition of their Honor 8 smartphone in India. Dubbed the Honor 8 Smart, it is basically a trimmed down variant of their flagship device. Considering that it’s an interesting choice to name it ‘Smart’.

Honor 8 Smart apparently seems to be an Indian exclusive product; at least that’s the case as of now. Neither US nor Huawei’s homeland China has this device. To keep the costs down, Huawei has got rid of the dual camera setup on the rear and the Kirin 950 chip on the inside. Instead, the Honor 8 Smart sports a Hi-Silicon Kirin 650 chip on the inside. It is basically the same 16nm chip found in the Honor 5C. It is, however, worth noting that the Honor 8 Smart sports the same 5.2-inch Full HD display upfront.

Coming to the cameras, the Honor 8 Smart rocks a 13MP Sony IMX214 powered rear shooter in place of the dual 12MP camera setup seen in its costlier sibling. That said, the IMX214 is a fairly capable sensor and is found in the last generation flagships like the Xiaomi Mi4, OnePlus One etc. Thus, the Honor 8 Smart is expected to capture decent quality images. It would, however, be interesting to see whether the camera app on the mid-range Honor would be as intuitive as its flagship edition. Up front, the Honor 8 Smart sports an 8MP front facing camera which is capable of taking selfies even in a dark environment all thanks to its display flash feature.

Powered by a 3000mAH battery on the inside, the Honor 8 Smart runs on Android 6.0 with Huawei’s own EMUI 4.1 on top. To appeal to a larger section of the audience, Huawei has priced the Honor 8 at Rs 19,999 thereby placing it against the likes of Lenovo ZUK Z2 Plus and LeEco Le 2 Max, which again keeps it on a slippery slope considering the spec-heavy competition it is up against. Much like its older sibling, Honor 8 Smart too will be sold offline and Huawei is probably hoping that’d do the trick as the number of quality options available offline are bare minimum.
