After a lengthy skirmish period, Samsung can take a relief as the DGCA (The Director General of Civil Aviation) has finally lifted the ban that prohibited usage of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone on any Indian flight. The permit is valid for the handsets which were purchased after September 15th and feature the distinctive ‘green battery icon’.
In an official statement, a Samsung spokesperson mentioned “Customers can identify the new Galaxy Note7 with the ‘green battery icon’. Devices displaying this visual icon are safe to charge and use during the flight. It is important to note that Samsung has not sold a single unit of Galaxy Note7 in India so far. The ‘green battery icon’ will apply to all Galaxy Note7 units that will be sold to customers in India when it is launched.”
“We recognize the inconvenience this has caused to customers, flyers, and airline authorities, and remain committed towards customer safety.”, he further added.
A public notice issued by the DGCA earlier this month on 9th banned the usage or charging of a Note 7 smartphone on all airlines. Thankfully, for the Korean electronics giant, the withdrawal comes just in time for the festive season. We wouldn’t be surprised now if Samsung comes up with a series of offers and attractions for aiding the troubled users and customers. However, it might be a challenging process as reports for explosive devices are still pouring in from across the globe.
The decision comes at a time when the situation is only getting worse in other countries, the US aviation is still against the device and not long ago, “strongly advised” the passengers not to turn on or charge their Note 7 smartphones during flights. Recently, a burning case in China was claimed where the Note 7 unit runs on a battery produced by a different manufacturer.
Additionally, some owners who have received the Note 7 sporting the safe battery label, reported that their phone suffered from critical heating and charging issues. Although, on close inception, Samsung blamed the conditions and environments they were being used it. Hence, the Note 7’s fate remains largely uncertain.
Samsung executed a global recall of about 2.5 Million Note 7 smartphones and has stated that 1 Million users have been already issued the replacement. It will be quite interesting to see how the market leader handles one of its most awfully intense quarters.
