WhatsApp Adds Video Calling in the Latest Beta Update

WhatsApp has been constantly adding new features to serve its wide user base which contains over a Billion members. However, today the Facebook-owned messaging client has updated its Android beta channel with the ability to make video calls. It has been rumored for quite awhile but now, it seems to be finally rolling out to the public beta users.

As any other feature WhatsApp includes, video calling is also extremely straightforward and simple to use, you tap on the call button in a conversation and the app gives you two options, video or voice calling. If the recipient’s phone also has the updated WhatsApp version (2.16.318 (451462)), the video calling interface will pop up that contains a couple more standard buttons such as mute mic, switch to the rear camera, end call, and go back to the text messaging window. In case the person on the receiving end hasn’t updated the app, he or she will be notified to do so. The list of video and voice calls will be available on the left panel of WhatsApp’s home screen.

Currently, the call quality is mostly adequate, however, it is not as good as say, Google’s Duo. However, given the number of people who use WhatsApp every day, we’re sure it won’t take a lot of time for them to update and improve the grade. Video calling on WhatsApp is still in beta, hence, you’ll have to wait unless you opt in or sideload the APK file which can be found at this link.

WhatsApp recently also added native GIF support, user tags in group chats, Snapchat-inspired drawing tools for images, end-to-end encryption, and a whole lot more. Video calling was one of the most demanded features as every other messaging application has support for it and with the latest update, they’ll be surely delighting their enormous number of active users.
