InFocus will Soon Launch an Aadhaar Enabled Smartphone with Iris Scanner

Infocus has announced that it is all set to launch the India’s first Adhaar-enabled Iris smartphone once the company is successful in obtaining a certification from the Government authority STQC (Standardization Testing & Quality Certification). We have seen this implementation earlier on a tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris) but apparently, this is the first time a smartphone will be getting this feature.

The Aadhaar Enabled devices will be hot linked with the users Aadhaar number and will use the biometrics to authenticate. The Iris image sensor will be authenticated against the biometric data in the UIDAI key. For the sake of security, the key is encrypted and is stored locally on each device thus making it very hard for intruders to break in.

Moving on to the phone itself, the Infocus Aadhar enabled phone is a variant of the Bingo 20 and will be made available latest by February next year. The smartphone heralds with a 4.5-inch display and will draw its power from a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and is paired with 1.5GB of RAM. On the storage front, the device will offer 8GB of internal memory and a microSD card slot that can accommodate up to 64GB. Running on Android 5.1 Lollipop the Infocus is backed by a 2,300mAh battery and features the usual bevy of connectivity features including 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

UIDAI has been pushing for Aadhaar enabled phones as it claims that this will be a ‘’gamechanger”. Since 104 crore Indian citizens already have Aadhar cards and about 40 crores of them own a smartphone, the scope of this initiative seems to be alluring. Also, the price of smartphones with biometric scanners, especially Fingerprint sensor has come down drastically. With the technology at the place, the authorities claim that this will help most of the citizens to subscribe for Government programs and also get authenticated without actually submitting the KYC. That said, some of the smartphone makers, likely most of them, might be adamant to open up their ecosystem and they are not wrong either, especially after considering the huge amount of personal data on your smartphone.

Also, the UID is battling out the Supreme Court order that asks them to not make the Aadhaar mandatory for enrolling into benefit schemes facilitated by the Government. Companies like Apple may fight tooth and nail to avoid handing over any type of control over their devices to the Government authorities.
