Thanks to the advent in technology most of us are using gadgets like fitness wearable to continuously monitor our physical activity and thus use the insight to stay healthier. Infact wearables like Goqii band has tied up with nutritionist, doctors and diagnostic labs to ensure a complete ecosystem. Also, it becomes important for most of us to keep a track of our body vitals and rushing to a pathology lab everytime is neither convenient nor economic.

Mediano is a Bengaluru startup that offers a device called HOME (Hands On Monitoring Equipment) capable of keeping track of Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Electrocardiogram, Blood Ocygen Content, Haemoglobin Content, Respiratory Rate and Body Temperature. The device stores data of up to 8 home users and will also let the user know if the results are within acceptable levels.

Who Needs Mediano HOME?

Well to be frank this device is as necessary as any other electrical appliances or maybe even more. Most of us don’t find the time to get ourselves checked untill and unless something is wrong. With Mediano one can focus more on the precautionary aspect of health rather than the cure. Since the device is blended with wireless technology it will also act as an aggregating point for your families health data and this will come in handy in case of future health investigation.

How does Mediano work?

At a first glance it looks like an XBox controller rather than a diagnostic device. The HOME is powered by infrared and near-infrared spectroscopy technology while the blood flow pattern from the body is extracted from photoplethysmography. The data is then seamlessly synced with the Medaino iOS and Android mobile app which in turn stores, analyzes and displays the body’s vital data in real time basis.

All one needs to do is press both the thumbs on the sensors and the machine extracts ECG signal from three electrodes and PPG from IR, NIR and visible optical sensors. The best part is that it takes into account 100 samples/second so that the average of the reading is taken, which again is a thumbrule when measuring body vitals.

The device also comes with a LCD display that collects and analyses the data collected in a time interval of 10 seconds. All the data will be sent to the Medaino’s server and will also be displayed on the mobile app and can be accessed by the entire family. HOME comes with a rather simple user interface and is water resistant. The company ahs beta tested HOME with more than 500 users and is ready with the working prototype.

Why should you buy one?

I would like to point out two important aspects when it comes to healthcare, one is dignosing the disorder and other is taking regular care of the body. As pointed out earlier most of us are not in a habit of getting the entire body checkup done, its usually when the Physician advises we get the tests done. The HOME from Mediano seems like a near perfect solution for keeping a hawk’s eye on body vitals and also maintain the data.Also frequent runs to the diagnostic center are not cheap either and since the pledge starts at a reasonable $105 the device seems to be a worthwhile investment. The product can be preordered from Indiegogo campaign and is expected to be shipped by March this year.

Alternatives?

After watching the demo I was compelled to see if some other company had come with a similar product. Scanadu Scout is a similar device that will let you scan the vitals and access it anytime anywhere. The product is already selling in the US but at almost double the price of $199. However, the Xanadu has tied up with FDA and will also aid for one of the largest consumer health studies of its kind. Apart from that both Xanadu Scout and the HOME boast of similar features.
