The $99 AirBar Brings Touchscreen Functionality for Your 13-inch MacBook Air

If you a disgruntled Apple user whose answer for a complete touch screen went unanswered even this time fret not. AirBar is a plug and touch solution that brings touch for your MacBook Air, yes you heard it right touch screen for MacBook Air. The AirBar allows users to browse websites, watch videos and play games by using the touch screen. Moreover, the AirBar comes with an AlwaysOn sensors that are powered by the USB.

The AirBar is a rectangular magnetic frame that sits at the periphery of your screen and needs to be plugged into the USB. Thankfully, the AirBar is not that pricey at $99, considering the utility it offers. Behind the scenes, the AirBar works with the help of the IR sensors, just like the one used in Kindle. However, the most impressive part is that the Mac OS thinks it to be just another pointing device and thus eliminates the need for additional software. One can swipe through the photos, rearrange tabs on the browser and yes you can also doodle on the MacBook.

Since the bar sits at the bottom of the screen one needs to detach it before actually closing the laptop lid and this turns out to be one of the few cons. I have been using the touch on the Kindle which also works on IR sensors and believe me selecting smaller objects like a five-lettered word is a herculean task and I don’t expect it to be any better with the AirBar. Currently, the AirBar supports just MacBook Air and  it also supports Windows laptops, however it wont support the MacBook Pro yet since it doenst has enough space below the display to host the AirBar.

Just to make it clear AirBar works well with your fingers, gloves, paint brush or even pencils, just take care that you might damage the display by choosing something sharp since there is no touch capacitive layer. While the AirBar might not exactly be as good as an integrated capacitive touchscreen display but it sure reminds us how desperately Apple needs to envisage a touch screen on the Macs.
