Huawei’s sub-brand, Honor, has now launched a new smartphone in the form of the Honor 8 Lite in Finland. As evident from the name, it is a cheaper version of the company’s last year’s flagship smartphone. Interestingly, the Honor 8 Lite hasn’t been introduced in China yet.
The Honor 8 Lite bears the same design language as its costlier sibling. Up front, the smartphone packs a 5.2-inch Full HD (1,920 x 1,080px) IPS LCD display covered by a 2.5D Curved Gorilla Glass. In fact, it looks exactly same as the Honor 8 except for the single camera module located at the rear. That said, another difference between the Honor 8 (Review) and the Honor 8 Lite is in the processor that’s located under the hood.
Instead of using a Kirin 950 octa-core chip, Huawei has opted to include the mid-range Kirin 655 SoC inside the Honor 8 Lite. For starters, this is the same chip that powers the Honor 6X. (Review) The in-house processor is based on a 16nm node and makes use of Mali T830 MP2 GPU. This is mated with 3GB RAM and 16GB of onboard storage, which is slightly lower than the setup found inside the Honor 8.
As for the cameras, Huawei has opted to include a single 12MP f/2.2 rear sensor onto the smartphone. In fact, this is one of the key differences between the two smartphones. For those unaware, the original Honor flagship came with two 12MP rear shooters out of which one captured images in monochrome and the other in RGB. Apart from the dual rear setup, the Honor 8 Lite also misses out on a Laser Autofocus technology. That said, the smartphone features an 8MP front facing camera for clicking 77-degree wide-angle selfies.
Despite the performance downgrade, an interesting feature of the Honor 8 Lite is the EMUI 5.0 build running on top of Android Nougat 7.0. Though this update has now started rolling out for the Honor 8, the availability isn’t widespread still. The Honor 8 Lite is now up for pre-orders in Finland at a price of EUR 269 (Rs 19,500/$290 approx.) and is set to go on sale later this month. As of now, the Black and White variant of the smartphone will be readily available in the country. Thereafter, Honor plans to introduce a Gold and special edition Blue variant somewhere around March. It is expected that Huawei will be showcasing this smartphone at the MWC this year along with global roll out dates.
