Seasonic Unveils PC Power Supply With Redesigned Modular Cable System

In years past, all PC power supplies had a rat’s nest of cables that fed into your computer. If you didn’t need all those cables, you had to try and tuck them away somewhere. Anyone who’s spent time poking around in computers over the years will know power supply design hasn’t changed much. Sure, modular designs have become common for enthusiast hardware, but Seasonic is trying something a bit different. Its new SSR-750FA Connect PSU has all the modular connections on a separate unit that connects to the power supply itself via a single cable.

A modular power supplySEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce usually features removable cables, each of which plug into the PSU box. This can be more aesthetically pleasing as there are fewer unused cables to hide. However, not everyone has a window in their PC case. There’s a more functional reason for modular designs, as well. Those unused cables can hinder airflow and make your system run hotter. The Seasonic Connect PSU accomplishes both those feats in a new way.

The PSU itself is a 750W unit with 80 Plus Gold efficiency certification. That’s enough power for almost any configuration, even those with multiple graphics cards. It also has a hybrid can controller that keeps the device completely silent up to 40 percent load. The thing that sets the Connect PSU apart is the secondary plug housing. This tall, thin part attaches to your case behind the motherboard with just a single cable bundle leading back to the PSU. A series of magnets hold it in place, and it has RGB LEDs, because of course it does.

All of the modular cables plug into the secondary connector, allowing you to feed them up to the motherboard without as much clutter. Seasonic was also able to make the cables shorter because most of them just have to peek up around the edge of the board. Many cases have cable routing openings to make this even easier.

Seasonic has not confirmed pricing or availability for the Connect PSU, which it has been teasing for some time. You’ll probably pay a premium for the new modular system, but Seasonic has a good reputation in power supplies. However, that Connect hub is quite tall — it probably won’t fit in smaller cases. You’ll have to take some measurements before you get your heart set.
