Google’s Pixel 4 and 4 XL debuted late last year to mixed reviews, and the budget companions of those phones should arrive soon. The rumored Pixel 4a has appeared on video, complete with specs, first impressions, and plenty of footage of the design. If the 4a is anything like the 3a, it could really put the company’s current flagship phones to shame.
The latest leak comes by way of a Spanish-language YouTube channel called TechnoLike Plus. The video features what we believe is the smaller Pixel 4a — a 4a XL is probably very similar, sporting a larger screen and battery. We don’t know how this phone came to be in this YouTuber’s possession, but it looks legit.
The first thing you’ll probably notice is the large hole-punch camera in the upper left corner. The Pixel 3a had a larger bezel at the top to house the camera, and the Pixel 4 has a similarly expansive forehead to house all those face unlock sensors. The hole punch is a more “modern” design seen on phones like the new Galaxy S20. However, the opening looks much larger on the 4a, possibly to make manufacturing cheaper.
There’s a single 12MP camera on the back housed in a square module in the same style as the Pixel 4 with its dual cameras. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the back, a feature Google dropped with the Pixel 4 in favor of 3D face unlock. The body itself is plastic, just like the Pixel 3a. That didn’t stop it from being a great phone, though.
The video also featured a look at the phone’s specs, which include 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The processor steps up to a Snapdragon 730, which should be much more powerful than the 670 in last year’s Pixel 3a. The 730 has two high-power CPU cores similar to the ones in the 800-series chips. The remaining six cores are low-power cores, of which 800-series chips have four.
As of a few weeks ago, we expected the Pixel 4a to appear for the first time at Google I/O. However, that event has been canceled due to Coronavirus fears. Google might still unveil the device in early May as it hosts various online events intended to replace I/O, but it may also wait a bit longer to launch the phone over the summer.
