After Xiaomi, yet another Chinese brand has now announced a new concept smartphone. This time around, Huawei has taken the onus on them to manufacture a smartphone that will be able to stand out from the crowd. Frankly speaking, Huawei has managed to do that with their Honor Magic smartphone. It not only comes with a unique design but packs a new software that’s apparently based on Artificial Intelligence.
Honor, as you are already aware, is a sub-brand of the leading Chinese OEM Huawei. Dubbed the Honor Magic, the latest phone from this upstart brand looks quite premium thanks to its metal and glass exteriors. That said, the Honor Magic doesn’t really sport the stereotype metal unibody design; rather the glass on the front and the back of the smartphone curves equally towards all the eight edges. This is unlike, dual edged devices that are available in the market from the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi. Honor claims that they have made use of 3D glass technology to strengthen the arc of the smartphone.
Up front, the Honor Magic sports a 5-inch Quad HD (2560x1440p) AMOLED display which is flanked by a rectangular button. This button apparently houses a Fingerprint Sensor which can be used to unlock the device as well as a number of apps. That said, it’s worth mentioning that the Honor Magic misses out on capacitive back and content menu buttons, as the home button does the function of those too. The home button basically allows you to do a number of stuff like returning to the previous page, browse search history, return to home screen and much more.
In terms of internals, the Honor Magic packs a Kirin 950 octa-core processor and a Mali T880-MP4 GPU. This is coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Talking of optics, the Honor Magic sports a 12MP dual rear camera with dual tone LED flash. The rear camera implementation is same as the one found on the Honor 8, hence it is expected to shoot some good looking images. There is also an 8MP front camera for wide angle selfies. Nonetheless, the selling point of the Honor Magic is its software. The concept phone from the Chinese OEM runs on a tweaked version of Android Marshmallow 6.0 with the company’s own Honor Magic Live OS on top.
Huawei has made use of artificial intelligence for the software of the Honor Magic. The Chinese firm claims that their device is smart enough to understand the next thing you plan to do with your smartphone. For example, if you are talking about an upcoming movie plan with your friend, the Magic Live OS will show you contextual information regarding the current movies that are running in theaters near you. The implementation is quite like the one seen in Google Pixel smartphones that come with Google Assitant on board. Powering the Honor Magic is a 2900mAh battery which comes with the company’s proprietary fast charging technology.
The Honor Magic will go on sale in China later today at a price of 3699 Yuan ($532/Rs 36,092 approx.) It will be available via Huawei Mall, Jindong, Lynx and Suning Tesco outlets.
