Samsung is kicking off 2017 with upgrades for its A-series smartphone lineup including the Galaxy A5 and the smaller Galaxy A3. Both the devices will debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas, however, the details have been officiated early. The major highlight of both handsets has to the IP68 certification making them water as well as dust proof.
Apart from the IP68 rating, both the handsets have inherited a slew of features which were only available on Samsung’s higher-end models such as the always-on display and USB Type-C ports instead of the Micro USB. Furthermore, the design and build have been slightly tweaked featuring a “3D glass back” and metal frames all around. Precise details for the rear haven’t been revealed yet, although we’re assuming some sort of reflective hue effect. Additionally, the software also supports “Secure Folders” which was originally introduced in the defunct Galaxy Note 7. It essentially allows the user to lock files and applications by either a pattern, PIN, or a biometric authentication system.
In terms of specifications, the Galaxy A5 2017 sports a 5.2-inch Full HD Super AMOLED up front and is powered by an octa-core processor (Exynos we assume) clocked at 1.9GHz. It comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage which can be expanded further up to 256GB via a Micro SD. On the camera front, there are 16MP front and rear shooters which also support screen flash. Additionally, they run on Android Marshmallow with Samsung’s custom skin running on top. Lastly, there’s a fingerprint scanner housed under the home button, USB Type-C port, LTE Cat 6 network connectivity,
and a 3000mAh battery with fast charging.
The Galaxy A3 2017, on the other hand, comes with a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, an octa-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of onboard storage with support for MicroSD card up to 256GB. Moreover, it rocks a 13-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel on the front, fingerprint scanner, LTE Cat 6 network connectivity, USB Type-C port, Android Marshmallow, and a rather tiny 2350mAh battery with fast charging.
Both phones will be available in four color options – Black sky, gold sand, blue mist, and peach cloud (wow!). Samsung is commencing sales initially from the UK from early February, pre-orders for which will be available from 20th January. The pricing and global availability details, however, haven’t been announced yet.
Commenting further on the launch, DJ Koh, president of mobile communications business, Samsung Electronics stated, “At Samsung, we are always trying to ensure our customers have the most advanced products on the market, We integrated our unique approach to design as well as the features Galaxy customers have come to love to provide added performance without compromising on style.”
