The distraught smartphone manufacturer, BlackBerry has updated its Android lineup in India with the DTEK 50 and the DTEK 60. The BlackBerry DTEK 50 is priced at Rs 21,990 while the DTEK 60 will retail at a much higher Rs 46,990. The DTEK lineup is touted to extend the high-security standards that were previously exclusive to BlackBerry OS to the Android smartphones as well. Both the phones come with cryptographic features tagged along with a secure bootloader. Furthermore, the DTEK app shields the other third party applications installed on the phone.
The DTEK 50 comes equipped with a 5.2-inch FHD display and is powered by Snapdragon 617 alongside a 3GB of RAM. On the storage front, the device offers 16GB of internal memory along with an expandable card slot that can further accommodate up to 2TB. The camera setup includes a 13-Megapixel primary sensor with PDAF and fast focus lock while the secondary sensor is an 8-Megapixel unit which also comes with a flash. Backing the device is a 2,610 mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 2.0.
The BlackBerry DTEK 60, on the other hand, is a more powerful premium offering that boasts of high-end specifications . Powering the device is Snapdragon 820 alongside 4GB of RAM and internal memory of 32GB which is expandable up to 256GB. On the imaging front, the DTEK 60 boasts of a 21-Megapixel primary sensor with PDAF and f/2.0 and an 8-Megapixel secondary sensor. The battery capacity is pegged at 3000mAh and the DTEK 60 also supports Quick Charge 2.0. Both the phones run on Android Marshmallow but only the DTEK 60 gets a Fingerprint sensor.
BlackBerry is scripting its success story by ditching the BlackBerry OS and also foraying into the Android ecosystem. The Canadian manufacturer claims that the new BlackBerry range are extremely secure since they constantly monitor the use of applications on the devices, analyze the data transferred and warn the user in case the need arises. Also, BlackBerry has kissed goodbye to the physical keyboard, a feature that helped it achieve the peak. It also remains to be seen on whether BlackBerry will exercise the same degree of control over its hardware since it has recently decided to outsource the same to its partner manufacturers. On the contrary, BlackBerry is banking on the fact that both their phones are enterprise ready.
It is pretty evident that BlackBerry is not interested in playing the price game but the question that remains largely unanswered is whether the Android-powered BlackBerry still warrants a premium price tag with all the competition around and if so will it be able to attract the buyers with its proposition. I personally feel that Nokia and BlackBerry clung to Symbian and BlackBerry OS instead of hopping on the Android Bandwagon and this seems to have snowballed into a death kneel for both the companies. That said it would be interesting to see how well the new Android phones from BlackBerry will fare in the market.
